  • Dental cavities are the most common chronic disease in kids! They're 5x more common than asthma and 7x more common than seasonal allergies. Crazy, right?

Here's the scoop: cavities are caused by bacteria. Add sugar (and sometimes salt) into the mix, and you've got a recipe for tooth decay. But guess what? Cavities are preventable!

That's why dentists and pediatricians team up to keep your child's smile healthy. It's now standard practice to check kids' oral health during their regular doctor visits. These well-checks, every 3-6 months, are perfect for keeping tabs on those little teeth.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), fluoride varnish should be applied every 3-6 months starting at 6 months old. Fluoride varnish is a superstar in cavity prevention! It replenishes tooth enamel and shields teeth from bacteria and acids.

At South River Pediatrics, we offer fluoride varnish for kids from 9 months to 3 years old at each well-check visit. We also recommend seeing a pediatric dentist between 1-2 years old.

  • Kids get sick or hurt when you least expect it. Don't worry, we've got you covered! Our team is ready to get your little one back on track, whether it's a fever, cold, flu, or even COVID symptoms.

👩‍⚕️ Saturday sick visits? You bet!

  • Is your child turning 3? Get ready because many insurances only cover one well exam every 365 days after that milestone. But don't worry, our providers have you covered. During this annual examination, we’ll complete all necessary forms for sports, camps, and colleges—just make sure the physical falls within the required timeframe.

If your child is gearing up for High School sports, an updated physical dated after June 1st of the current year is often a must. But what if your child already had a physical within the last 12 months and your insurance won’t cover another? South River Pediatrics has the perfect solution: Sports Physicals. These are out-of-pocket expenses specifically designed to clear your child for sports, without the hassle of insurance paperwork. No vaccines, no ongoing medical issue discussions—just a straightforward exam to get your child in the game.

Don't let insurance restrictions hold your child back. Contact our office today to see if they qualify for a Sports Physical based on school and yearly requirements. Get them ready to play!

  • Tongue-tie, or ankyloglossia, is a condition that can really limit your baby's tongue movement. This happens when a short, thick, or tight band of tissue (the lingual frenulum) ties the tongue’s tip to the floor of the mouth.

    Why It Matters

    • Breastfeeding struggles: Babies with tongue-tie can have a hard time latching on.

    • Eating, speaking, and swallowing issues: As they grow, kids might face challenges in these areas too.

    The Fix: Frenotomy

A quick and simple surgical procedure called a frenotomy can help. Here’s how it works:

    1. Examination: The doctor checks out the lingual frenulum.

    2. Snip, Snip!: Using sterile scissors, they free up the frenulum.

    3. Quick & Easy: The procedure is fast, with minimal discomfort and bleeding.

    What to Expect

    • Minimal Pain: Few nerve endings and blood vessels in the area.

    • Quick Recovery: Most babies handle it like champs!

Potential Risks, though rare, complications can include:

    • Bleeding

    • Infection

    • Damage to the tongue or salivary glands

    • Scarring or reattachment of the frenulum

    Talk to Your Provider 🩺

Your healthcare provider can discuss the best options for your child’s specific needs.

  • Warts—yeah, they happen to everyone, especially kids and teens. Sooner or later, we all get them. While most warts eventually vanish on their own, it can take forever—months, sometimes years! They’re not dangerous, but they can be super annoying, especially depending on where they pop up.

At South River Pediatrics, we’ve got a killer solution: liquid nitrogen! We freeze those pesky warts right off with cryotherapy, also known as cryosurgery. Sure, it might sting a little, but it’s totally worth it. After we zap it, a blister forms and the dead tissue just falls away. We’ll keep at it every 3-4 weeks until that wart is history. Plus, this treatment might even boost your immune system to kick future warts to the curb.

  • Kids grow up fast. That's why regular well visits are crucial—they help us track growth, hit those developmental milestones, and address any health concerns. Plus, they keep vaccinations on schedule to guard against serious illnesses.

At South River Pediatrics, we stick to the American Academy of Pediatrics' recommended well visit schedule. Infants and toddlers, in particular, need frequent check-ups because they develop so quickly. Here’s our suggested schedule:

    Newborn

    2 weeks

    1 month

    2 months

    4 months

    6 months

    9 months

    12 months

    15 months

    18 months

    24 months

    30 months

Starting at age 3, we recommend annual well visits. Even if your child is in great health and up-to-date with vaccinations, these visits are perfect for focusing on overall wellness, nutrition, and any physical, mental, or emotional concerns you or your child might have.

Note: Annual well visits are a must if you need school, sports, or camp forms filled out.
